Web life style is not a new concept at all for most people. Now a day, people send E-mail, Web Browsing, Internet Chat, Home shopping, and E-commerce via Internet. Internet becomes a new society day by day.

Computer is the first device to access Internet. However, more and more people who are not good at computer would like to access Internet from their point of view. Internet becomes a huge knowledge source opening to the world.

According to study, computer is a good appliance for Internet surfing for people aged around 20-40 because they know computer better than other age layer. It is easy to know that for age above 40 and below 20, home appliance seems a good candidate for them.

International Data Corp (IDC) estimates that the market for worldwide set-top boxes will explode over the next few years, with over 5 (five) million units to be shipped in 2000 and 11-12 million units in 2002.

Microsoft Windows CE is a Real-time OS (RTOS) for consumer appliance with Win 32 API compatible.

ITE H6060 is a platform to demonstrate related TVPAK product proposed by Microsoft. TVPAK, a narrow-band Set-top Box (STB) running Windows CE, aims Internet access, education, and entertainment market. TVPAK also is the first Chinese pilot product since Microsoft established. TVPAK targets TV display environment, Microsoft proposes a special-made User Interface (UI) for TV. Three big beautiful icons show on TVPAK first UI, Windows, Internet, and SVCD/DVD.

Scope

ITE is one of Microsoft Venus solution providers listed in Venus White Paper announced on March 10 in ZhengChen, China by Bill Gates. ITE IH6060 is a reference design for Venus and other TVPAK related products.
Venus is the 1st TV platform announced in China announced by Microsoft. It targets Internet Access, Windows Environment, and Entertainment 3 major applications aspects.
Standing on ITE IH6060, user may surf Internet through dial-up modem, using Windows. Wireless keyboard and remote controller offer a comfortable input environment in front of TV.

TV Set-top Box (STB)

IH6060 is a dedicated STB running Windows CE. For TV environment, IH6060 is the first design adapted for its special application environment. IH6060 is the first TV STB dedicated for Chinese market from Microsoft.

Home Appliance

In home, TV is the center of living room. People spend lot of time in front of TV, TV is a broadcasting environment which is not an interactive channel. IH6060 brings TV into an interactive device via Internet.
Due to IH6060 is a home appliance, wireless keyboard and remote controller is essential for cozy sofa.
Instant on is the major feature IH6060 different from tradition PC. IH6060 can be turned on in a second and still keep previous stuff while you turn off. For consumer product, it is a necessary function for human being usage.

Dedicated Machine

IH6060 is a dedicated machine for 3 major fields, i.e. Internet access, Windows environment, and entertainment. What we define a dedicated machine is easy-to-used, comfortable environment, elegant design …etc.
IH6060 applies lot of technology for TV environment including background color, fond enhance, user interface ... etc.

Internet Access

Internet access through modem is current design. Via this, IH6060 opens the huge Internet treasure to all family members including who is not good at computer. IH6060 offers an easy-used interface. Microsoft provides most up-to-date browser and E-mail tools for IH6060.

Windows Environment

IH6060 keeps Windows environment for learn and upgrade your own system. People can download software from CD-ROM, Internet to upgrade your system.
On Internet, 3rd party or MS offer lot of software including games, encyclopedia, dictionary, audio player, video player ... etc.

Entertainment

IH6060 offers entertainment power through VCD/DVD. VCD/DVD is able to offer audio/video ability. In China, VCD/DVD offers education capability as well. There is a video switch on IH6060 to switch TV in either IH6060 or VCD/DVD automatically.
VCD/DVD can be an external CD-ROM as well though parallel port by a defined communication protocol. In such a configuration, IH6060 can be either an Internet box or full-function box including CD-ROM and A/V entertainment.

IT6060 Hardware Configuration

IT6060 is a cost-effective platform using RISC CPU. SH-CPU, ITE chipset, ITE SuperIO, IT9501 Graphic (TV encoder), 33.6/56 Kbps modem, 8/16 MBSDRAM, and 24 MB Mask ROM construct this platform.

Way to Broad-band STB

Thanking about current Internet infrastructure, analog modem is the most cost-effective carrier for Internet surfing.
ITE IH6060 is the product to fix the strong market requirement, i.e. using modem to access Internet.
ITE IH6060 is not the only product ITE offer on STB product line. We are working on different front-end design including ADSL, Cable, and Satellite. By then, digital data, audio, and video are carried in different media through ITE’s STB.
